#1. Make yourself indispensable
The moment anyone can replace you in any organization or any place you're in; then you are not fast. Make your major goal anywhere you find yourself to be "being indispensable".
In every organization, you are been paid for three things:
a) What you do
b) How you do it.
c) How difficult it is for you to be replaced.
A soccer ball in the hands of my 6 years old niece is a toy but in the hands of Lionel Messi, it is millions of dollars. You get a job for what you do. Every Job has a job requirement, which is what to do. But for you to be paid more, there is how you must do it. In every organization people are paid differently. How you do the job determines the distance you will go in your organization.
How difficult it is for you to be replaced determines how much you will earn in your organization. People get promoted and get raises in their income based on how indispensable they're to their organization.
Aim at being valuable to your organization. Make sure even when your organization is downsizing, you won't be on that list of people been laid off.
You can have the talent but talent requires timing. Some important questions you should always ask yourself if you want to be indispensable are:
- What does my company need from me?
- Out of what I am suppose to do, which one contributes the most?
- Work harder than anybody in your field?
Set priority well. Separate relevance from irrelevance. Focus on what adds the most value to you and the organization you work. Have a sense of urgency when carrying out your tasks; finish them on time.
Think on what you want to do and how you want to do it. Leave the past, don't focus on it. Failing doesn't mean you're are a failure, it just shows that you should review or change your strategy. Pay attention to the future. Think positively about the job and how you can make it better before you start the job. Doing this improves your confidence on the job and creates new set of possibilities for you to do the job better, thus putting you on the fast track.
Love what you do
The love you have for your job determines how passionate you will be about the job. If you love something, you will always want to give your best to that thing. If you love what do, you won't perform your job shabbily. Love for your job makes you rise up early to your job and always leave any job you finish with a signature of excellence.
Give extra time in what your are doing
Your work determines your worth. Always go the extra mile, it gives you that extra point above others in your field. Resolve to clear your duty from your boss, then ask to take off task from your boss. Ask what more you can do for your boss to make his work easier. The fact that you are swapping jobs doesn't mean that will be successful in your new job. Work hard on your current job. Ask for more job and be quick to finish the job.
